The Huon Show is a typical rural show held at Ranalagh in the Huon Valley, southern Tasmania, each November (our Spring). We try to get down there each year. It's generally better than the larger shows such as the Hobart Show as you don't get as many people. This year, the crowd was particularly disappointing though. Perhaps the weather (it was cloudy and threatening but no rain while we were there), but just as likely is the drop in interest in such things. Even the exhibits were smaller this year. Pity, really.
One of the exhibits each year is a display of artwork and other things made by school children in the region. My daughter had a few entries a number of years back when she was still at school. I took these photos as they show that there are a lot of upcoming talented Tasmanian artists. I'm sure that you would agree.
An activity that I always enjoy watching is the woodchop. This year, one particular series of events was conspicuous by its absence. The axemen would cut into a high pole (3 or 4 metres), jam in pieces of timber to stand on, and then chop the top of the pole. Why they were missing is a mystery, but I suspect it is due to the stupidly high cost of insurance. This is killing off a lot of community activities.
Of course, there are plenty of events in the arena, many of them involving horses. Although the Jack Russell Terrier racing is fun. Didn't see them this year :o(
